WEBINAR: HPC Modelling and Data Science Capabilities for a Renewable Blue Ocean

WAVEC WEBINAR: High-Performance Computational Modelling and Data Science Capabilities for a Renewable Blue Ocean| 18th September 2020 |2h30 – 3h30 PM (WEST, Lisbon time) by Dr. Eng. (invited Prof.) Guilherme Vaz

WavEC Offshore Renewables is organizing its first free webinar (of a series of several upcoming ones) on High-Performance Computational Modelling and Data Science Capabilities. The webinar will take place on the 18th September 2020 at 2h30 PM (WEST, Lisbon time).

The goal of this presentation is to show the recent developments on Computational Modelling and Data-Science done at WavEC, focusing on sustainable ocean solutions. Firstly, an Introduction on the how´s and what´s of HPC, CFD, Data-Science, Artificial Intelligence, Big-Data Sources, will start the presentation. Secondly, some HPC CFD-based applications for Wave Energy Converters (WEC), Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWT), Current Turbines, Noise Modelling and Ocean Cleaning Solutions will be presented. On the Data-Science front specific examples for underwater object detection and visibility assessment will be introduced. The presentation finishes with an outline of the plans for further R&D efforts on these topics at WavEC, together with some remarks on general worldwide trends such as Satellite-based applications and Digital Twins.

Guilherme Vaz, Dr. Eng. (invited Prof.), Head of HPC & Data Science Team at WavEC will be the principal speaker.

Guilherme Vaz is an Aerospace Engineer with PhD in Mechanical/Naval Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST, Portugal) and at Maritime Research Institute of Netherlands (MARIN, the Netherlands). He is an expert on computational potential and viscous-flow tools and high-performance computing (HPC). Founder and developer of the CFD code ReFRESCO. He has 20 years of experience (Portugal, the Netherlands and Germany) on CFD, hydrodynamics and aerodynamic modelling of maritime, ocean engineering and renewable energy structures, and was a founding member of the Renewable Energy Team (RENT) of MARIN. Guilherme started at WavEC in October 2019 and is currently head of the HPC & Data Science team. He has published more than 125 articles on CFD and HPC developments and applications for the Maritime world, and is currently an enthusiast researcher on Data Science applications for Sustainable Ocean Solutions.
